But... they would also throw a fault if your incoming AC mains contained too much distortion for them to accurately predict zero crossings.

A classmate & friend designed and installed electrostatic precipitators. They sensed zero-crossing for timing turns-ons.

At one cement plant, they would commit Lucaside, letting the smoke escape. He could see no cause for same when he got the units back.

He finally visited and looked at the line. It was a rural plant with a long feeder. The ~1000HP mixer had a VFD. At certain speeds, parts of the 60 hz sine wave could not been seen at all, given the huge chunks the VFD+motor made in the waveform.

The only fix he could come up with to red-tag certain RPM's of the mixer. They were OK with that.
