Elevator Feeder Sizing

Hello-

I have searched the forum and reviewed the code several times, and I am still not 100% sure how to size the feed for an elevator.

The elevator I am dealing with is 480V, 3PH, FLA=34A, Full Load Accel. = 80A, and a duty of 2,500. I have no clue how to use the duty number... And when reviewing the sizing for the feeder I have mixed feelings whether to treat it as a regular motor (feeder =125% of FLA, in this case Accel. FLA) or 200% based on table 430.22(E) of the NEC 2002. Can anyone clarify for me either where to look or what is meant by the code?

Thank you,
John

When I'm dealing with something like this, I like to keep the figures in the beginning of the Articles of the NEC handy, they help to keep things straight as to where to look for what. Above is Figure 620.13 from the 2002 NEC, which lays out the sections that deal with each component of an elevator.

I don't know what the 2,500 means either, but I'm probably as shaky on elevators (or more) as you are. The last one I looked at had a minute rating, that matched up with 430.22, and the figure above seems to indicate that the branch circuit conductors are sized to that.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

My only involvment in elevators I would be handed engineered drawings and spec's - only provide whats there on the funny pages. Otherwise it sounds like you need more information from the elevator installer on what they want you to provide. (Unless you are being paid to provide that information...)

Unfortunately I am trouble shooting work that a contractor "designed" without an engineer?s approval. I am going to hound the elevator guys and search out submittals since elevator feeder sizing seems to be an NEC issue.

Why'd you even touch it? Are you correcting the GC's work, that has
passed? Is state/ City /county inspection, IE Safty Statement Required ?
Was the elevator included in orginal construction plans ?

Could the duty of 2500 reference the weight rating? And do you even need to know this to size feeders? As stated above, I would let the elevator company show you what you need to install(plans and specs).
