Not sure if it is required, but I do the same thing. I also consider if it is a public space, or if it is an employees only space (employees will usually know the way out like the back of their hand).

Along the same lines, our local AHJ requires emergency lights in all public restrooms. Even the one hole occupancies. Go figure :confused:
