I've got a psych ward which is part of a hospital. I've included 2 duplex receptacle at each bed; 1 on normal, 1 on critical.

Because it's a psych ward, power plugs for the bed can only be 2 feet long. As luck would have it, my receptacle that can be reached by this short cable is on the side of the bed that my normal receptacle is on.

517.33 indicates that normal patient room beds must be on critical.

I don't see any way out of relocating my critical branch receptacle to side of the bed near the bed's power connection. By all means let me know if you disagree with that.

But my other concern is that if I do move the critical branch receptacle, I would like to leave the normal branch where it is, leaving me with both receptacles on the same side of the bed. I don't believe that's a problem but I wanted to double check.

Thanks for your input.

517.33 (e) says " omit recepticles" in psychiatric bed areas. To me that means just the lights need be on the critical circuit.

OK - I agree with that 517.33(e) gives me the out from a receptacle in the patient bed area being on the critical branch.

This is consistent with 517.18(A) Exception No. 2.

It is nevertheless a requirement that we have 4 receptacles at Patient Bed Location in accordance with 517.18(B) given that Exception No 1 does not relieve us of this requirement.

Is there agreement on that? Note that exception number 1 under (B) is significantly different from exception no. 2 under (A).

Thanks in advance for your input.

Doesn't 517.18(B) Exception 2 allow you to have as few as zero receptacle outlets in a psychiatric security room?

Then if 517.33(A)(3)e. allows you to omit receptacles in a psychiatric bed area from being on the critical branch, shouldn't it be allowed to connect the bed to an optional normal system receptacle?

yes - no receptacles are required in a "security" room. But I'm talking about an ordinary patient bedroom in a pysch unit. In this latter case, the 4 receptacles are required.

What do you mean by "optional normal" source? You're free to put these receptacles on normal, critical or equipment branch. 517.33(e) merely relieves you of the requirement of putting half of them on critical.
