According to 700.12 E, emergency lighting from unitized equipment must be on the area lighting circuit except for open areas. My question is this, is the night lite considered normal lighting in this area. Exactly what is the normal lighting?

Re: emrgency night lights

Assuming that the night lighting is on continuously, even when the other lighting is on in the area, then I would considere it to be part of the normal lighting. My understanding of the requirement you mention in 700.12(E) is so that a problem with the/a circuit normally supplying lighting in an area will not leave the area in darkness. Having the unit equipment tied to the night lighting circuit would seem to accomplish that purpose. I also believe that, if an area is supplied by a night lighting circuit and at least two other circuits, then the exception to 700.12(E) could be applied.

Re: emrgency night lights

Dave,
Night lights and emergency lights are two different animals!
In many designs they are the same fixture. The night lights are always on, and are of the battery back-up type. They provide some of the normal illumination for the area and if that circuit is lost, they switch to battery mode. Most of the schools and commerical buildings in this area use that method.

We use this method here also but many times the night lights are not battery back up, they are emergency generator supplied.

They may stay on 24/7 but more likely will shut off during periods that the building is vacant.

We have done large retail stores where we install a switch that the last person leaving hits and makes the store black including exit signs, emergency lighting and store display cases.

It will all come on with the fire alarm or if the utility power fails.

Don and Bob,
Yes, many buildings here are that way too. I was trying to draw attention to the fact that night lights and emergency lights serve different functions and are not always the same fixture as you have pointed out. It is important to know the difference and not assume they are the same.

With this thread it seems I am beginning to see a trend of double teaming by Bob and Don. I wonder, will you two double team threads where you agree with me or can't find anything to point out that I didn't cover to your liking?

Dave I will post to anyting I disagree with, I do not decide to post or not based on the posters name.

Case in point is Pierre, I agree with Pierre many times but I do not post 'ditto' each time. If I disagree with Pierre or CharlieB or Charlie E or Roger or Al or George or Ryan etc. I will post my disagreement then I will learn if I am right wrong. :)

"I will post my disagreement then I will learn if I am right wrong."

One of the best (sometimes the hardest) ways that I learn on this forum is to post how I understand an issue. Then I wait for other posters to post and watch for ideas.
I won't speak for Bob, but this is how I have learned the most on this forum. I don't mind being incorrect at all, I would rather learn here and apply it correctly in the field, than do it the other way around.

Re: emrgency night lights

I would like to add that the above mentioned emergency lights are supposed have documented inspections every month. How many meet this requirement? :D

Yeah, I am sure that the first thought that comes into Don and Bob's mind when they wake up is "How can we "double team" Dave today?"
