Having trouble. I am installing a exhaust fan/light combo in a shower with an 8ft ceiling, do I need to gfci protect it? 410.4d says it should be listed for wet locations which it is but nothing about gfci protection. Am I missing something?

The gfci requirement usually comes from the manufacturer which would fall under 110 I believe. There is no NEC (2005) gfci requirement for this. In my area its a local law.

Thanks brother. I will have to check what it says on the fan. I guess I should also check with the ahj.

FWIW, I've yet to see a fan that didnt require GFCI protection if installed above a shower/tub area. Not really sure why they require it, most have a plastic grille, and have a EGC to boot, so not sure what danger they see? Someone actually changing a lamp while taking a shower? :) "Hey honey, can you get me a lamp?"

Yeah I'm with you on that, but I have to say I've never seen an exhaust fan actually above the shower. They are always above the toilet even though that's not the true intent of them the duct man always puts them above th toilet. :)

I am the duct man so I put them right outside the shower so I dont have to GFCI protect them. :D

I'm seeing the fan/light combos in just about all of the shower stalls in my area. I guess it a new trend.

wow, so you're a jack of all trades? Do you do plumbing and tile work as well? :)

I ment I only duct exhust fans, hoods, microwaves, etc... I dont want to do the duct work, especially since a duct license IS required in Connecticut, And I dont have that license, but i'm only paid from the neck down.

I have never had a call back with a fan unit over a shower, they are rated for it, what did you experience?

I actually love tile, small jobs anyhow. plumbing is the easiest trade out there.  ;)

I plumbed a brand new house a few years back...start to finish. That turned out....ummmm....interesting? ;)

Did you really? I did a few central vac systems. much easier if you ask me. :D

Yeah, got talked into it. Also set the furnaces, ran the refrigerant and condensate lines, ran the yellow gas flexible pipe...oh and of course I did all the wiring too.
