I am currently bidding a job where the engineer has designed a generator connection cabinet that will feed (3) services in the event of an extended outage. The cabinet will be rated at 2500 A and will feed the (3) services through Kirk-keyed breakers in the MSB's. The problem is, they show the output of the connection cabinet running to a "junction box" as they call it, and then branching out to the services. Each feeder will have (7) sets of (3) 700 kCMIL for a total of (28) conductors per phase including the incoming (and the grounded conductors).

What would be group's thought on what to use as the "junction box" ? I checked CMC utility products and their cabinets accept a maximum of (14) per phase. I'm thinking maybe some sort of bussed manhole ?

I've not come up against anything like this in nearly 45 years, so I'm open to suggestions. Thanks

Does this connection cabinet from CMC do what you want?

It's interesting that CMC is only a couple of miles from where I lived when 3 to 7 years old.
When we moved from there to the Chicago area my brother and I told my mother that the new neighborhood was horrible and that we needed to move. There were only houses around and no gravel quarries or canyons to play in. ;)

That would work. I must have missed it on their site. I've got an old CMC catalog on CD and found it there. Thanks

I have a dumb question. Why the separate generator connection cabinet and junction box? Check out Trystar they make all sorts of generator connection cabinets including custom models. Maybe they can do something that can accommodate the generator connection and the three sets of feeders in one box.

Another question: Why a junction box at all? Is the 'junction box' on the plan really a pull box?

Not dumb questions at all. I am quite familiar with Trystar, having used their cabinets for years. I haven't checked with them, being the weekend and all, but I doubt they make a GCC that can accommodate 28 conductors per phase. I guess it's worth a call to the rep.

No, the junction box, as the Engineer calls it, is really a distribution box. Again, he probably doesn't know any way to handle all of those conductors coming out of the GCC.

Thanks

Wow! Curious, what size generator ?

No idea. It will be a roll-up in case of an extended outage. I would imagine they would try to get a 1.5 or 2 M. They can manage the loads by shutting off anything unnecessary. This is a dairy manufacturing / processing facility and they have a lot of refrigeration.

They make a padmount one up to 4000A I bet they can accommodate what you need.

Don't forget to add a phase rotation monitor.
