Good day all,

I am doing the electrical design for a small 8800 square foot clinic w/ a business occupancy. I do not believe I am required to provide a Fire alarm system, the building is sprinklered. Less then 500 occupant load.

The sprinkler system will require a tamper and flow switch and the building has one Roof top unit for HVAC that is over 2000 cfm and will require a duct smoke detector.

So?where do I connect these 3 fire alarm devices with no fire alarm system/panel?

Thanks you.

I don not know where you are from, but in NY the NYS Fire Alarm and Building code state that a "B" occupancy (if 100 % Sprinkled, water flow and tamper) require duct detectors on return side >2000CFM (return air plenum, NO DUCT return !) and all units shut down upon fire alarm. Also require notification devices, pull stations and NO smoke deteectors. If you are not sure, talk to a fire marshal that has juristiction.

I am in WI and I am following the IBC. Building Group type B, 500 occupant load or more require an fire alarm and detection system.

So do I need to install a small fire alarm panel to handle the Tamper flow switches?

From what you are telling me you MOST definitley need a fire alarm control Panel (FACP). Some external relays may be needed for fan shutdown based upon the FACP manufacturer and model you choose.

I think you are falling into a trap that I used to when reading the most exciting book in the whole world, the IBC. You are probably not required to provide a "manual" fire alarm system, which consists of pull stations.

If the entire building is sprinklered, you will still need a fire alarm control panel to monitor the flow and tamper switches, minimum...

Of course, at that point, most owners, from my experience want to add some horn/strobes and smoke detectors. The cost of such devices is not so hard to swallow once you've already spent major bucks on the panel.
