I have 10 of these staircases. I am standing in a bedroom as I take these pictures. I know I need a floor box where the single gang boxes are laying on the floor.

Where does the wall space for the room start? Will it wrap around the rail to the stairs, or would you call this a landing?

210.52(A) General Provisions. In every kitchen, family room, dining room, living room, parlor, library, den, sunroom, bedroom, recreation room, or similar room or area of dwelling units, receptacle outlets shall be installed in accordance with the general provisions specified in 210.52(A)(1) through (A)(3).
(3) The space afforded by fixed room dividers such as freestanding bar-type counters or railings
Floor boxes were missed on the bid and I have to add 10. Like to avoid adding 20.

Thank you.

I would consider the entire area wall space however I am sure others see it differently. I believe it was Charlie B and I who discussed the need for recep. by handrails in lofts. I believe they need them while he was saying they are not needed.

Here is a thread similar to that issue

Chris if this what I see in the picture is part of the habitable space of the bedroom start your layouts from each side of the the stairwell opening at last riser......If that makes sense.

Why not?..........

Because there aren't any inspectors like you(competent) around here.:D

Most guys around here think you just need to buy a codebook and then let it sit under the seat of the van, then say " I know I read it in there somewhere, I've been doing this for fifteen years"

I agree. It is my understanding from your post, that the rail/stairs enter the room, and are not part of a hallway.

See 210.52(A)(1)(3)

I quoted that art in my first post.

My question is would you consider a landing a similar room?

ng)n.1. a. The act or process of coming to land or rest, especially after a voyage or flight.
b. A termination, especially of a voyage or flight.

2. A site for loading and unloading passengers and cargo.
3. a. An intermediate platform on a flight of stairs.
b. The area at the top or bottom of a staircase.
(A) General Provisions. If this was my house, I would put one in where the two railings meet at the 90. My wife would see this space and be at Home Goods in a heartbeat.

Nice safety railings around the stairwell.:roll

Your spoiled. Its not that far to the ground. (no hi-jack here):D

If the area you are talking about is the 6-7 ft. space in front of the down stair case where the railing will go, yes you need the receptacle there if it is more then 6ft to the wall, you may get some relief from the inspector on this if it is close to 6ft they may let you push it a little to and put the box in the corner on the wall to avoid a floor box. I have had to install floor boxes in that exact scenario many times, I have a real dislike of floor receptacles also.

Well I just looked at the pictures again, and see it is a doorway to the left of the stairs. Add the floor boxes.

I believ you have to heve them too. Space created by fixed room dividers is considered wall space. I believe railings are considered fixed room dividers. That being the case I would consider the end of the rail the same as the end of a wall and start measuring from there.
