Normally, if there is an attic above the cans they don't spray the ceiling joist. They usually will spray the roof rafters and the entire attic is an envelope. No ridge vents nor soffitt vents.

The crawl spaces are done a similar way. Hard insulation on the perimeter foundation wall with no vents. 10 mil plastic is then installed around the walls on on the crawl floor. Joints are cemented together or sealed in some way.

Sometimes they will leave one open duct in the crawl to condition it a bit.
I don't think that is quite legal since technically you need a cold air return on every area that has a vent. Somehow they get away with it.

You have to look at the label inside the can. It will tell you what bulbs you can use with a respective trim. A shower trim used with an IC can will usually restrict you to a 40 watt A bulb. In the case of an eyeball trim you'll have to remove the socket from the top plate and remove the plate altogether because the trim has an articulating part. But again, you'll have to read the instructions inside the trim or find a cut sheet that explains what trims you can use.

You have to be careful with shower trims. Some are not rated for IC cans. The plain flat, gasketed glass trims are quite often rated for non IC cans only. Generally, the ones rated for use with IC cans are the drop opal type that include an internal reflector.

BUT...the instructions on Halo cans say not to install them "in a manner in which to entrap heat". Does being covered with insulation entrap heat?

I am not sure where that came from or what entrapping heat actually means but an IC rated can may be insulated over. Now you may not be able to fill all the holes with a foam insulation over the can????? That may be what entrap heat means.

Are you talking about the Halo IC cans????
