garage requirements??

what is the required height for recepticles in the garage area and where can i find the answer to this in my NEC book?:confused:
 
Recall looking for that one day and could not find it also. The local code says that it is 24in. from ground level to bottom of outlet box. Just had final inspection yesterday and the AHJ didn't say anything about them.

Would like to know where it is in the NEC though, thanks for the reminder. :rolleyes:
 
The NEC does not specify what height to install receptacles in a dwelling unit garage.

Put em on the floor, wall or ceiling....wherever you want.
 
There is no height requirement in the NEC.
Local amendments may prevail.

Many ECs place them at 48" AFF
 
IMO it does not make a difference unless you have something specific in mind (besides storage) for you garage. What does matter is, if you think a 2 car garage will work build a 4 car, if you need 4 car build a 6 car.

24" in the Garage. Why? I would be finding out reasons behind it!

The amount of receptacles I've installed in the baseboard, I actually have to agree with you... :grin:
 
Maybe the height requirement in some locals is based off of keeping the receps out of a potential classified zone?

Which is exactly why I wonder what they are thinking to have a receptacle height amedment for a residential garage... :roll:

I've heard that as well, and all I can guess is that someone who makes a rule like that must not understand classified areas too well. ;)

Probably because everyone stacks stuff along the walls of their garages. Boxes, shovels & rakes, mowers, etc. can all prevent a receptacle mounted at less than 24" to be rendered 'not easily accessible'.

Your only required to have 1 receptacle, who says the car won't be in the way?
 
I know they require receptacles to be placed at 48" in residential garages in Cheyenne, WY. I was never in a position to ask to see documentation as to if it was legally written into law, or just something required by the inspectors.
