We are installing a 350kw generator outside an office building.
A circuit breaker is installed on the generator.
The generator has an enclosure with lockable doors.

According to 702.11 the disconnect needs to be readily accessible. According to the definition of readily accessible, behind a locked door is compliant.

My question is does the disconnecting means or the generator need to be within sight of the building?

2008 NEC 702.11 Outdoor Generator Sets
Where an outdoor housed generator is equipped with a readily accessible disconnecting means located within sight of the building or structure supplied, an additional disconnecting means shall not be required where the ungrounded conductors serve or pass through the building or structure. The disconnecting means shall neet the requirements of 225.36.

The way I see it the first half of the sentence is refering to an outdoor housed generator. So as long as the generator is within sight of the building an additional disconnect is not required.

Tim,article 100 defines the term"within site of"and it means that the specified equipment is visible and not more than 50' away.In your case the "specified equipment"is your disconnect @ the gen set and it must be visable and not more than 50' away from the building being served.Your disconnect must also meet the requirements of 225.36,stating it must be "suitable for use as service equipment".I have been trying to get gen manufactures to not only make there breakers visable but also to have a SUSE rating,if the gen set you have can meet this requirement I/d love to know who the manu- facturer.is.,Bottom line is you will have to add an addtional disconnect.I have to admit it pretty sad to pay all that money for a generator and then have to add a disco...
