Im curious to see how my bids come out compared to other electricians. Dont start using ur calculator, just give be your best round about figure

A local Company has addeded a dormer on to there office. They have a square D qo panel in the basemant with lots of space

im going to run a subpanel upstairs and off of that brach circuits.

12 4 ft florecent lights
the room is about 26' by 26'
they specify how many outlets but they wants alot lets say every 4-5 feet
4 air conditioning lines
4 dedicated 20 amp curcuits for big copy machines and computers
4 smoke detectors
the 12 florecent lights on 4 switches

The wire for the sub panel cannot be piped on the outside, there having the place sided. there is an old chimney chase inside for a fireplace which doesnt exist. The builder suugested i run the wire for the subpanel in there, first i laughed it off. Then though about it, on the 2nd floor there taking the chase out so it would be used instead of breaking open the wall on the first floor. Its crazy, but can i do this??

The price i give is supplying all fixtures and outlets with an inspection

Hit me with the numbers guys
thanks for any help

Why dont you tell us what your bid was?

I cant speak for everyone here, but I will say that I cant even think of a price off the top of my head because it just doesnt work that way. I need to see some plans, specs, or visit the job site.

Bidding from the hip is how you lose money.

Re: Give me numbers off the top of your head, .....

sjaniga my bid is 2800 with rough and final inspection u wont lose any money on this bid, hehe im just curious as to what others would bid.

There are no plans, i gave the specs, dont be scared to give a guess, jeez, lighten up fellas

Re: Give me numbers off the top of your head, .....

Scott, you and I are on the same page.

I suppose some warehouse or repititious type jobs could use "SQ ft" or "unit pricing", but they would have to have been done before for the learning curve.

In most other situations, I don't see this being feasible given todays sophisticated bidding means.

Re: Give me numbers off the top of your head, .....

NIFT21,no not affended.Just that the specs were very open ended.
Lets start with the class of the building. Will we get by with romex ? now the fixtures are they 2 lamp wraps or 2x4 drop ins, that could change it $400 real fast.Guesing at 20 recepts.Them AC could be almost anything, will take them as 20 amp dedicated.
Will offer my bid this way 26 x 26 =676 times $3 sq ft=about $2000 plus fixtures maybe $700 to $1000 depending on who picks them.Yes probably safe around 3 grand. But that is more of a guessament.I could see this taking anywhere from 30 to 40 man hours. With FL wages i would be ok.With them northern wages not sure.

Re: Give me numbers off the top of your head, .....

$2800 Sounds low to me. Off the top of my head I'll say 32 hours labor @ $75.00. $2400.00 $500.00 materials + 35%. $675.00 Add Permit fee. Oh well I guess I lose this one to the low bidder.

Re: Give me numbers off the top of your head, .....

or you'll lose it to the guy who returns the expensive useless materials to the truck

Re: Give me numbers off the top of your head, .....

thanks guys this is what i wanted, Jimwalker, sorry didnt think to desribe the wire and style of light.

I will be using romex only, 12-2 for all receptacles and lighting.

im using 4 ft lighting fixtures, 26 dollars per fixture that the customer picked. Mounted on a sheetrock ceiling.
Thanks for all the replies fellas

LUKE warmwater, -not sure what that comment was about, please do explain

Re: Give me numbers off the top of your head, .....

Nift21 ,that was what i based by bid on
However take note to Scotts labor at $75 (not saying its wrong for where he is at )down here we could do fine at $45 an hour.Part of my old job was estimating.I made material list and did a point by point time estimate. At bottom i listed total man hours plus travel plus parts. The $$$ were plugged in by the owner.Guess i did good we got about 70% of the jobs.
Better to lose the job than money
Might add this,my estimates when i see the building first usually are far more accurate than from just a print.

Well said.

Nift21: Heres an idea: Instead of insulting the people who are trying to help you out with their valuable time, why don't you figure it out for yourself like every body else does. Your scared to bid a job and your calling other people "little girls"? Give me a break.

Re: Give me numbers off the top of your head, .....

Pierre ,i know things in NY are higher than here, but dam that sounds exspinsive. If you don't mind me asking just how much an hour do you charge? If we charged $50 per switch we would never get a job.

Re: Give me numbers off the top of your head, .....

I'd probably take that job for $2800. I raised 3 kids on beans and taters.
