H/O running own wire

"Homeowner"...."running wire". Those words in the same sentence are usually very bad. When it also involves an electrician and "saving money", it can only be worse.

I would run away from this as fast as possible

I've seen some nasty work from people with licenses as well....

I agree with gold, if a HO wants to add stuff while im there doing electrical, he can have all the liabilty. If money is so tight he cant afford a pro. to do the entire job i think they need to save up and have me do it. I offer a finance progam with high interest, just a little something. Its either that or save up. I would also explain that electricity dosent care who you are or what you have, it all kills the same.

Some HO are just ignorant, and are dollars chasing dimes.;)

I dont believe the electrician would be responsible for someone elses work
It doesn't matter whether you or I believe the electrician was responsible or not. However it does matter that the lawyer, who is suing you, believes you are responsible. Lawyers like to use the "shotgun" approach to suing people. If you were involved with the installation and your name is on the permit - you get sued. That's why I said that you should go on record and indicate that you did not do this portion of the work. This is really a sticky situation because we all know that once we leave a job many HO's do their own electrical work to save the exorbitent prices we charge. After all, it's a well known fact that we electricians get paid in gold bullion. On the other hand, if I know, up front, that a HO is doing his own wiring while I'm on the job I would take the exception and go on record as I mentioned.

This particular insp. is VERY tough and I knew he'd pick up on it hence why I wanted to know what to do and say. He was there almost 2.5 hrs measuring wire lenght out of rec etc... average for him.

2.5 hours for electrical inspection. That's what I call an inspection. Normal time for an inspection here is 10-20 minutes. If you let a homeowner do any work here you had better inspect it yourseld because the inspector isn't going to pay much attention. With 20 or 30 inspections a day how can they?

That's not the point. The people with a license take responsibility for their work ( permit and contract with scope of work ). I don't care how bad a homeowners work is so long as he is taking responsibility for it. If a homeowner wants to burn down his own house I'll loan him a can of gas and a box of matches but I wouldn't want to get blamed for the fire. ( How would I know he wasn't going to put the gas in his lawn mower and lite his grill with the matches).
