Re: Help to make this code forum better - from MHE Director

I think the format is OK as it is. I know I could never put a dollar value on the knowledge I have gained here. Thanks to Mike Holt and all the moderators for a job well done. As to the DIY issue, lets keep it open. DIY questions can be replied to in a manner that will emphasize the professional format without being rude.

Hey Sam for what its worth, I have never liked the term POCO. If you search all of my posts, you will see that I never use that term to indicate electric utility or the serving electric utility. I guess I am too proud of my field. On the other hand, this is the first time I have ever said anything about the term. It doesn't offend me but I just don't like the term.

Sometimes, I think I am weird. Other times, my coworkers will let me know that I am weird. And then my wife tells me . . . :D

I don't like it much either. I've only used it a little recently because I think I'm getting desensitized to it.(I'd rather say PG&E, but that's only good here). My reference to you was solely because, you are, the Power Guy.

Re: Help to make this code forum better - from MHE Director

On the subject of charging a fee for membership, I agree that this would prohibit or at least PO many qualified members. Unless there is some compelling reason that Mike needs the money to run this forum, a subscription fee would be counter productive.

I also have no problem with DIY's and other non-professionals lurking here, just when they ignore the rules. I know it's usually pretty easy to spot them but many times it resulted in an unpleasant situation that made us look like the bad guys.

Somebody made the suggestion awhile back that perhaps a prospective member should be required to pass a test before being allowed membership. In thinking about this it could be as simple as maybe six easy questions that could be answered from the NEC. This would weed out most impostors and for the rest be a reason to get a code book that we should all have anyway.

Well, since I'm the one that started the 'fee' issue, let me expand:

I think it would be a good idea to have an area for uploading photos and other things that I mentioned.

I wouldn't expect it to be free.

So, I wouldn't think a minimal fee for that section would be out of line.

Maybe that would be part of Mike Holt's Home Page, and not necessarily a part of the Code Forum.

Re: Help to make this code forum better - from MHE Director

I think the Idea of having Mike Holt participate say once a month would be nice. I also would like to be able to do diagrams and pictures as part of asking or answering any questions. The only other quirk I have, is when a bunch of us talk about our opinions but have no facts to back it up. Freedom of speech I guess.

Re: Help to make this code forum better - from MHE Director

Some type of online sketch pad, where we could draw and post electrical drawings would often be very helpful in making a point or asking a question.

Re: Help to make this code forum better - from MHE Director

i read and view this forum every single day, i dont do alot of posting, because i feel simply that i dont have the knowledge or experience that most do here but i always learn and sometimes things said here help me to dig a little deeper for my own benefit.. that said , i wouldnt pay for this... if it aint broke...... however, i do believe that many times we tend to be a bit haughty, and even inclusive, demanding that one has knowledge of an area, when the purpose of going there is to do just that GET KNOWLEDGE, is ridiculous in my opinion, which i know is just that (my opinion). Lets not make this the good ole boy's cyber club ok, freedom of speech and knowledge is what makes this site great, but their are others. however i would miss this one a lot for many times it is quite humorous. thanks for listening.

Being able to draw schematics and diagrams would be a cool feature.

Re: Help to make this code forum better - from MHE Director

Could we have capitol letters at the beginning of our member names?

Re: Help to make this code forum better - from MHE Director

Couple of replies here on some of the great ideas you are all contributing.

If we have a general discussion area - who should manage it? Do I have any volunteers?

And to put this topic to rest - we are NOT going to charge any kind of membership fees for the use of this forum.

Thanks all, and keep the ideas coming. It's great.

Thanks Test; an administrative commitment was what I was waiting for! I will gladly stop my post on fees! wildman

Re: Help to make this code forum better - from MHE Director

Forgot something! Moderator Charlie has my vote for "General Discussion" Manager!! wildman

Re: Help to make this code forum better - from MHE Director

For posting photos it is a far better thing that you learn how to do that yourself.

There are a couple of sites that offer free hosting. That way you soak upless of the bandwidth.

Also each and everyone here probably has ten Gigs or so of webstorage that comes with your ISP. You can FTP the files up to a folder on that free space and link to that.

That is fairly straight forward and if you need help I will gladly offer you what I can.

I am for a little more feature rich forum software. The fees for the better forum software programs could easily be offset by one or two members who would be willing to pay near what was mentioned for annual fees.

The simpler the software the more likely you'll stay focused on the replies.

A general discussion and a BS forum build continuity between members and therefore build a stronger community. IMHO

Anyway, thats my take on the subject.

Edited to remove an offensive word.

Re: Help to make this code forum better - from MHE Director

This may not make the forum any better....but I would like to see the late "Bennie" have his name/number recognized in some little way. :)

I whole heartedly second that idea. :)

Bennie taught me to look at things from a different direction. :)

I think a "drawing board" is an EXCELLENT idea! Sometimes people, like myself, will never 'get it' without a picture. :)

Why not make it mandatory to log in everytime? After 'xx' amount of log ins, why not ask the frequent user for a small donation? Just asking.
