So, what, exactly, does an impure 60 Hz sine wave have to do with the well being of people near them?

DE caused by skin effect? Nonsense. In fact, skin effect attenuates more as the frequency increases, so it would actually decrease HF electricity.

In larger high power systems, the rule could be look and you will find problems. Ungrounded systems with short to ground and limited return path through the earth, improper neutral connections so the radiated magnetic and electric fields become widely spaced in air, all kinds of stuff. There should be good demand for PQ surveyors, ghostbusters.

He made his living traveling being an 'EMF Ghost Buster'. In almost every case it would be traced back to non-NEC compliant wiring mistakes, as you said improper neutral connections etc.

He did not talk a lot about the health issues, he focused a lot on issue like PC monitors acting up due to EMF. If he was still active on the forums I am sure he would say that line filters are not the answer and just basic correct wiring methods will help a lot.

Bold added for emphasis. Basically, show me the math. If the bold were true, the same would be true for intentional high frequency electricity. I can assure you that, as a ham radio operator for over 20 years, making an antenna thinner will not make it 'broadcast more'.

When running noisy cables in conduit be careful not to attach the conduit to thebuildings steel structure. This can often be a lower impedance ground than your Applied EMI/RFI Techniques4 August 2015intended system ground, resulting in the entire ground grid of the plant to becomenoisy.

The NEC requires metal conduit to be bonded to building steel. To have them separate is a safety hazard in the event of a fault.

There is some good info in that doc. For instance, suggesting using shielded cable in non-metallic conduit instead of regular cable in metallic conduit.

The biggest problem with EMI/RFI cable runs (in my experience) is ingress, not egress. That and 'cross talk' between cables.

Make no mistake I have a high regard for anyone actually out in the field surveying, putting their body directly at risk in responding to other people's reports of problems. High regard.

There certainly exists electric power problems, from imperceptible voltage potentials and current flow on the ground or Earth paths, radiated EMF, up to and including electrocution hazards. The surveying itself is a bona fide endeavor.

Power line filters would be last on my list, after banning and removing the offending equipment and repairing/replacing wiring violations.

Yes, by all means, put copper threaded sheets on your bed and ground yourself while you sleep. Wear low impedance footwear, or better yet, go barefooted and spray the ground with water wherever you go so you can remain earthed with the mother.

From a psychology class I seem to remember a fundamental brain wave frequency being in the range of 5 to 10 Hz. I believe this is the alpha wave described above. For some reason I also seem to remember that if an external stimulus of near this frequency was applied to a subject that a psychophysical effect could be produced. I just now tried changing the pulse rate to an LED in this range and I did not feel affected. This does not mean I was not affected.

I was a subject in psychophysical experiments a very long time ago. This was related to signal detectability. The experiments were visual. I could detect signals that I really did not know that I detected. Following this semester the tests were changed to auditory and I was the designer and builder of the equipment to do the tests.

In days past there were people near WLW that had their bed spring talking to them. That was the days of 500,000 watts at I believe 700 kHz. I don't believe they had any physical problems other than talking springs that kept them awake.

I think that most of the talk about "dirty electricty" causing people problems is nonsense. However, a large loop with a high 60 Hz current might have a human physical effect. I have worked around moderate power radio transmitters at times and I never felt any bad results (20 W to at least 1 kW). I have been near a 50,000 W transmitter. I have had radio diathermy treatments. I am still alive.
