hours in a week

I am curious. How is it physically possible to work 80+ hours a week. Even at 7 days a week this is 12 hours a day.
What kind of life is that? Is the money THAT important???
What does someone who works that much do for fun? And WHEN???
I agree with Marc, after a certain amount of hours productivity and safety fall off drastically.

Yeah, yeah, I know, you have to take advantage of the work when it's there, but come on. Money is NOT the only important thing.
I guess I just have a different set of priorities.

Now, I am not saying the way I do it is the only way, but since I still like my wife and kids I still want to spend time with them.
We have family dinner every night. We go out usually a couple of nights a week also. I go to EVERY game, school or social function (day or night). I also go on every school field trip for both of my kids. This year was The Bronx Zoo (again), Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum and Great Escape.

On average I do anywhere from 30-50 hours in the field, and whatever it takes at home in the office. Maybe another 5-10 hours a week.
I do all my own paperwork, so having my office right in the middle of my house is good for me. I can do what I want when I want.
Sometimes I do billing or bids at 1am. Some mornings I wake up at 5am to do paperwork. Some days I do none at all.

It is the nature of the end of the business I am in, Having done it for years I was use to it. Since the heart attack the 36 hour days have gone the way of Dinosaurs.

I still work with many men that do this regularly.

Why do you care if someone likes to work a lot? Some people just have a greater stamina and mind set when it comes to work. And you see this with many immigrants and I don't mean illegals. They do what they need to do cause they have to. Regardless of what kind of life "you" think someone should lead. I personally like to work as much as I can and take a lot of vacations throughout the year. For some people its just a way of life. If your only making 10 - 15 bucks an hour 40 hours a week just doesn't cut it around these parts. Besides how many hours do you think most successful business/ professional people work? And not everyone has kids so why not make the Hay while the sun shines. Besides when I really need a break my body will tell me not some conjured up notion of what a work week should entail.

Judge and you too shall be judged...

I personally don't care what hours someone else works. If your work is your life, that's fine by me. Me, I do my 40 and that's it. There's too many other things to do and enjoy in life than to be working all the time.

I agree.....but I've worked around alot of folks that travel, being a road hawg and they love what they do, and they really get good at it. But motels and long hours are my worst enemy...Ive worked those 84+ hr weeks for 6-8-12 weeks at a time and I cant take it any more

Gyspy, is not part of my job description ...

Wow.

Tony, WHERE did I suggest how someone should live their lives??? In fact I specifically stated I know my way is not the only way. I was truly curious.
Brian's reply was to the point, and answered some of my curiosity.

I can pose the same question to you; Why do YOU care then what my opinion is?
That's all my post was. An opinion, and an explanation of what my week is like. Just like most of the other posts in this thread.

Sorry if I hit a nerve with you. Maybe you should take tomorrow afternoon of and take a nap.

Mule; Like I care.

I know all about you testing guys. You come in, set everything up, turn it on, hang out in the airconditioned data center, talk to the girls, have coffee, customer signs on the dotted line, go to the next one.
Not really hard to get 36 hours in a day.

May be true in some instances, but the testing crews I've been around on turnarounds have alot of work to get done in a short time resulting in alot of hours. Busting breakers, testing and re-installing, cleaning MV cubicals, testing cables, transformers, oil samples, or shooting IR is time consuming work.

Why I travel and work the hours? Money and time off. I will be on the road for 6 and a half months. I always say it's not how much you make but how much you save to reinvest. My goal is $50k a year to reinvest. Most likely it will be $60k this year. I guess it depends on what you want in life, goals ect. I"m 28 and single so why not. I just finished up helping my dad build a barn. I am currently in the raleigh, NC area scoping things out for a relocation. I just finished a trip up in Charleston, SC. My plan after working near New Orleans this past spring was to head west for the summer checking things out. I decide to head back to PA to help my dad with the barn. Yes it does get old. $14k a month on the W2 and another $5k tax free is pretty hard to pass up. I would only like to work 3 months a year after next spring.

I work in one of the safest industries out there. If I remember correctly 80% of the accidents come on the first day back to work after a day off.

If I was more involved with a family there is no doubt I won't work this much.

Pretty smart....put all that income away while your young...and later when you get burned out, or get a sweetie, and settle down, you'll have alot of experience under your belt, and will be a huge asset to someone locally.

Ive seen alot of road hawg's burn up all their income on having fun, and stay broke....either drunk or hung over and get fired then they have no where to turn....

Our long days come from blowups and switchgear rebuilds. We do have our share of sitting waiting for the data center to power down. I have sat hours and hours just waiting for the word to power down. Hospitals are famous for this at the moment we are schedule to "pull the switch" they have an emergency and dare not cut power (and I understand fully). I'd rather be working, than sitting doing a SODUKO.
