How did I fix it??

I would of shut down the main or disconnected the phases going into the panel.
It wont be the first time that I have done that. I have a danger decal that goes over the door to form a seal and it says that if someone touches this they are responsible!
If you worked for me and came back and told me what you did I would have to do 2 things 1 fire you for putting people in danger and running the risk of burning down an apartment building. Or if I felt that it just was a mistake I would have gone back that same minute to the job and fixed.

DON'T PUT PEOPLE AT RISK WOULD YOU LET YOU KID OR MOTHER STAY IN THE APT. TONIGHT!!

I suggest that you keep reading the post here and learn and pay attention to the senior mechanic on the job..

you should be a nurse cause an electrician you are not. it a hand held temp as TOOL mention
here is a pole
do you want me or him to take care of your electrical problem...

"you are proof that if you don't know what you are doing you can get electricity to work, but for how long"

1 I did not have access to the main.
2 all I did was turn on the range with everything else off.

I can see why you call yourself friendly, I think you have to get that thermometer out of your assets of tools

you said you are an electrician right! Disconnect the feed going into the main lugs in the panel.. it those fat wires at the top or if the panel is upside down they are on the bottom. And as an electrician you should have a set of hot gloves. You should also have black tape to tape of the wires. oh it live. that ok you replaced a switch or receptacle live before it the same thing.

I have down work for 100's of apts. at all hours of the day and night trust me when you tell them you are disconnecting them for the night that door gets open in 5 min.

you are so concerned with safety and are willing to play around with live wires inside a panel that is 30 -40 years old, I don't know how much you charge for residential work, or how much you value your life, to me that is simply stupid, and I will not force anyone into anything by threatening to cut off power. I told them I needed to get in the electrical room and to call me when they had it opened

Ok I guess you never changed a switch or an exit light or a ballast on anything...live before right ?
I am not pressuring anyone to do anything and I have shut down apt buildings because the FPE 300a breaker had a temp reading of over 245 F in the middle of the night. What is my option? Your was to leave a house with a problem good or bad. Hey would you ground the neutral in box to get the lights back on?

I am sorry if I hurt your feeling, but I have gone out on to many emergency call in the middle of the night where there were electrical fire and I have seen first hand what happens.

If you want I will give you my # off the form and when you have a problem I can talk you through it. Just leave people in trouble.

I have a question for you g. Why would you talk to someone like that here and list your homepage, and the fact that you are the owner as well?? You mention fast, friendly service, and you come here and belittle someone else in the field. This forum doesn't require a level of expertise.

That's all.

the fluke 62 is a really nice little infared thermometer. i use it a lot. flukes power quality book and electrical/electronic troubleshooting explains how to use it. its pretty simple to do

WOW, I know I mis-read this thread, I thought it was another how did It, not a Do It...

Ugh !

Sounds and Looks like a perfect storm ...

Don't worry I will call you when something dangerous comes up again?
and changing a light switch on a live circuit is not the same as disconnecting live service wires, 20 amp breaker and 200 amp main disconnect protecting the wires, big diference. Then again I can see why you would have a death wish.
