OK i have old phone and i want to use it for fishing only it generates about 100 volts and its marked 48A and theres two wires coming out of it when i hold these 2 wires it shocks me but when i put it into water ( RIVER ) nothing happens please help me what to do ???
This oak box is solid with no chips but has some scratching and abrasive rubs on the door that can probably be taken care of with scratch cover/polish. The door has a decal stating Western Electric made in USA. It has a screw latch for tightening the door. It is equipped with a five bar magneto and hand crank. The box is marked 299F at the bottom and L1 and L2 at the top above the terminal screws. The magneto is marked 48A...and pat'd in USA July 17,1894. The door is marked IV49. The box measures about 7 1/2" h x 7 1/2" w x 5 1/4" d and is attached to a slightly larger oak back board. There is a groove routed top to bottom on the back board to accomodate wires.

Re: How Does It Works?

What kind of phone is it? If you tried to post a photo, it appears not to have worked. Also, how will this phone be "used for fishing"?

If it has an internal battery, all that will happen when you put into the river is that the battery will slowly drain away all its energy. But I don't think it likely that the battery is strong enough to do anything you would notice (like cause sparks when the wires get wet).

Re: How Does It Works?

That is called poaching and there are laws against that, not to mention fines and jail time, and loss of fishing and hunting privilieges. You might check your state laws :( .

Re: How Does It Works?

I accidently dropped my phone in the water the other day when I was loading my boat onto the trailer and now it doesn't work. Can I use it for bait now? :D

I think you can use it for spear fishing but I don't how good they work. :D

Re: How Does It Works?

I don't know--never tried calling any fish on a phone--sure you got the right number? :D

Re: How Does It Works?

Apparently, unlike yourself, the fish are smart enough not to grab the wires while you are cranking it. :D

Re: How Does It Works?

Sell the phone to an antique dealer and use the money to buy some dynamite, works much better!

OK. I'm a little slow on the uptake on this one. So the idea is to stick the wires into the river, use the hand crank to generate a voltage, and wait for one or more fish to be stunned and float to the surface.

First, for the record, and ignoring the other members' jokes on the topic, this is illegal in every State in the US. Since I enjoy fishing and am just getting a start on fly-fishing, let me say that any manner of "poaching" threatens the future of "legal" sport fishing. So I would use my cell phone to call the local game wardens, and hope you get arrested and have to pay a big fine. ;)

Good Idea Scott!

If he lites the fuse and lays it in the bottom of the boat after it goes off the boat will be full of fish :D

(or should I say the boat will be full of river which is full if fish)
Either way the boat will be where it should be, "At the bottom"
