How to Advice from AOL

If that statistic is correct, why the big deal about arc-fault circuit breakers?

You know how statistics are, home cooking starts more fires, but electrical distribution in the home causes more deaths then cooking. (Electrical distribution accounts for 3.2% of the deaths while cooking only 2.2% of the deaths)

http://www.usfa.dhs.gov/statistics/national/residential/deaths.shtm

I imagine that is because more likely the electrical fires start and proceed unnoticed until people are overcome with smoke.

Oh yeah ...... and that money trail.

It seems to me the logical thing to do would be to mandate sprinklers in the kitchen at least, since so many fires originate there. I'd rather spend the money on sprinklers in my kitchen than a panel full of AFCI's, but that's just me.

That's a good idea... I might do that for my kitchen... now the big question, do I do feed the sprinklers with 120v or 240v, and do the heads point up or down......:rolleyes:
hmmm... I wonder if I can use pig tails on those sprinklers....

Drug dealers are breaking the law. A guy showing how to install a ceiling fan or light on the internet is not breaking any laws that I'm aware of, other than being stupid perhaps, but there's no law against stupidity.

Drug dealers are easy to take care of. Lots of white service vans out there they all look the same. ...........

Also how many amps do they draw? Are you gonna have to consider a bigger service? :D

Good thing we're rolling around in blue ones. The cow will never see us coming.

I like watching the videos loaded with mistakes. It's interesting to know what the general public has access to. Plus, I learned something from three tool guy. The one replacing the GFCI(??) with a GFCI. I learned that the new one gets installed slowly. I find that kinda funny.

I must be very weird because I have no idea why all you guys care about what AOL or the people that decide they are qualified to do their own wiring do.

I have only really been active here on the wicked web for about 2? years. I for one am still fascinated by the misinformation available. Heck, I'm still offering misinformation on this site.

Sprinklers

Sprinklers

I have them in my house.

House built in 1999. Local (Twp) code. If house was in a subdivision, not required RE: Hydrants present. If house was very rural, not required RE: Single house burn down, no risk to other occupancy. But our house is in the middle clasification - no hydrants available, we are on well water, but we do have neighbors.

At first it seemed an unnecessary added expense, but we do get some relief with home owner's insurance. And now that I have lived here for ten years, I appreciate having a sprinkled house.

Interesting note: I have been told at a NEC update class that Sprinkler systems are not sized to put out a fire, BUT to KEEP THE FIRE IN CHECK ENOUGH TO ALLOW HUMAN EGRESS.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the freedom of press in this country. Maybe AOL could be successfully sued in, say, Bolivia. But in this country, I can make a you tube video reading straight from the Anarchist Cookbook. And if your pursuit of happiness is blowing yourself up with TNT (recipe from the Constitutionally protected Anarchist Cookbook) or wiring a luminaire in your own dining room (as demonstrated on AOL), thank your founding fathers.

As was mentioned earlier, this freedom is to exchange info and ideas. This AOL video may help a consumer decide that the EC who showed up with an aluminum ladder to wire her chandelier may not be the right choice to upgrade her service.

And if we are complaining that the people who don't know a thing about electrical are the one's who are educating the DIY's, who's fault is that? I'd compare it to the debate over sex ed - if we think that by keeping them ignorant we'll stop them from doing it...

That's one thing I've learned to never assume. I've went on a few service calls where they had the "handy man" replace plugs or wiring and it was done all wrong.

They could only fail in either one of two ways: to indicate voltage where none exists, and to fail to indicate voltage where it does exist.

The former isn't a real danger, and the latter is eliminated by first testing a known hot, the wire under test, and the known-hot again.
I wouldn't leave home without a couple of "sniffers" with me. An invaluable tool!!

You can occasionally sometimes usually always tell the difference. I always like to ask questions of homeowners to find their take on a problem. Then I always try to fix their problem and hopefully things return to normal...well sometimes maybe. Thanks.

"Mr Sparky, how do I tell if I have a "normally" or an "always?"

"I'll be right over!"

Welcome to the zoo!
