Why do I have the option between these two types? What are the pros and cons of each? When and where would I use each kind?
You posted a catalog. Which two?
How sensitive do you want the meter to be?Why do I have the option between these two types? What are the pros and cons of each? When and where would I use each kind?
Right. A rectifier meter requires a minimum voltage drop which depends on the forward voltage of the rectifier technology used. At some point you will need to include an op-amp to get around this. How sensitive do you want the meter to be?
you measuring amps or micro amps?

Another problem encountered in measuring ac is that the meter movement reacts to the average value of the ac. The value used when working with ac is the effective value (rms value). Therefore, a different scale is used on an ac meter. The scale is marked with the effective value, even though it...www.tpub.com

Very cool.
I didn't know that such meters were still available new and in different varieties, and so cannot offer any opinions on which approach is better for what application.
However page iv might help.

I was just going to post that very thing.....Since the torque on an iron vane is proportional to the square of the magnetic field, and hence the square of the current, the scale of an iron vane meter will be non-linear with a loss of precision at the low end of the scale. Although some compensation for this non-linearity can be implemented by controlling the shape of the moving vane, it is still difficult to get good sensitivity at the low end of the range.
So for low current resolution comparable to that of a rectifier meter you really need to implement range switching, by changing either shunt resistance or CT ratio.
