This is a two part question; First in a laundry room are counter receps required to be gfci protected if a laundry sink is present and second is the recep for washing machine required to be a single recep. The laundry room in question has a dedicated circuit for the washing machine and a seperate circuit for the counter receps. Thanks For Any Help

Single seems OK for a washer (its not a common installation cuz they're more expensive)

And then you have no place to plug in the gas dryer.

I do not see an exception to the 6 foot rule for laundry receptacles in section 210.8 (A) (7) ?? If that is where this is going??

Gas dryer? No mention of a gas dryer here. Dude could have 240V electric dryer, or even no dryer.

True, but he didn't say that they had an electric dryer either. The question was is a single receptacle required for the washing machine. The answer is no.

Outlet with in 6' of sink needs GFI.
Washer outlet not required to be single but if with in 6' sink. Either single
outlet or GFI.

So IF ....you have a duplex recept. for the washer and dryer(gas)..is that device required to be GFCI protected...IF it is within 6'.

Either single
outlet or GFI.

ALL receptacles within 6 feet of a laundry sink need to be GFCI protected. There is no exception for a single receptacle or a receptacle that is not readily accessible.

I agree with Raider. Any receptacle within 6' of the laundry sink requires GFCI protection.

I do think it is past due to cover this

From the 2005 NEC

210.8(A)(7) Laundry, utility, and wet bar sinks ? where the receptacles are installed within 1.8 m (6 ft) of the outside edge of the sink

There is an exception from the GFCI requirements for dedicated appliances in dwelling unit garages, typically this is done with a single receptacle. That rule is in a different section than this rule (on sinks),so the excepion does not apply.
It appears that the 2008 NEC will delete that dedicated appliance exception based on the fact that appilances can have no more than 0.5 mA leakage by the listing standard.

What is the standard leakage? As in, how many appliances add up to a tripped GFCI?

Just recently had a 2-year-old freezer tripping a GFI (maybe, it was intermittent.) I didn't come up with a convincing reason for myself as to why it tripped. :(
