License to buy material

We're going around in circles here. About 8 pages back I already said:

"The simple truth is that manufacturers and distributors found out that they can make lots more money selling to anybody with the cash or a credit card than restricting sales to those in the trade or business."

So it's all about the money, not peoples livelihood or the public's safety.

A home owner can still burn down a home without buying a single cover plate. Think about it.

No, it sounds awful on paper, on a forum or on TV. :D

Yes, protect my choice of livelihood by forcing homeowners to hire us. That is where I think 99% of this is coming from.
When I built the home I live in I was involved with nearly every aspect of the construction. If I would have had the time and certain equipment - I certainly would have entertained the possibility of not hiring anyone to do any of the work. Certain tasks, still go much easier with some help though.

If I shared the idea of the thread title, I shouldn't have even picked up a hammer, other then to install electrical items.

I like the idea of having a license for grey pvc boxes, panels, generally nice stuff but no license for blue plastic boxes and the like. There also needs to be mandatory jailtime for a non licensed person doing electrical work on a home or business

Cletis, take a stab at wording the statute and an estimate of cost of enforcement.

Also think about how likely such legislation would be given that it is not even illegal to sell non-UL listed equipment that cannot be legally installed anywhere in the US. (Plug-and-pray grid tie inverters, for example.)

No laws at all, or just minimal to no enforcement of them?

Here it is State law that you can't perform wiring installations for another person unless you are licensed, or registered apprentice working under someone who is licensed. There are also installations that are not required to have permits/inspections (primarily in the agricultural area, and in single family dwellings-if not installing a new service, but just because those don't require permits and inspections, doesn't make it legal for non licensed person to install wiring - yet they do get away with it easier because no permits are required.

Injure or kill someone with your wiring and even if you are fined for wiring without license - that is nothing compared to whatever civil suits may be coming your way.

No law at all. Your grandma could print up some cards, rusty pick-up, orange 5 gallon and call herself an electrician around these parts of the woods

I agree. Grey PVC boxes = quality work. Blue plastic boxes = hack work.

Cletis, I was not picking on you but the unintended consequences of such well intended laws/rules such as you proposed can make for beaucoup de craziness.

Also do not forget that every manufacturer will circumvent anything you ever come up with.

The net result is you will empower some bureaucrats and hamstring the rest of us.

Please comment on this if you disagree.

I think the best thing would be that the people selling the materials should know what they are selling and then they could tell people what they should buy for the job. Hopefully they had experience before they started selling the materials. Or the place, box stores, could require,or train their people. That is all.

Well, no. You can't fix stupid, ignorant and cheap. You could talk all day long. Best thing would be to make the supplier responsible if they sell material to someone and the house burns down. Kinda like a bar being responsible if a patron is drunk and goes out and runs somebody over.

Hmmm. Intoxicated on electrical work. I like that.

You realize having such people means they will want more pay, and prices will probably increase some because of it. Even supply house employees don't know as much about products and installation as they used to, because the bean counters don't want to pay higher wages, those with such knowledge get higher level positions or get pushed out of their job.

New counter salesmen - you better know what you want, possibly even know the catalog number or else they will not have a clue in many cases.
