Great analogy Marc......Without a GFCI, someone, somday could be "Shakin their Booty". Great song BTW.......

Even if you install that ice machine indoors, it will require a gfci because it definitly takes money...

cool!

We don't really have a definition of a vending machine.

I seem to remember a code change slide when this hit the books (Maybe IAEI, maybe Mike Holt) that showed an bagged ice machine as the example in the slide. "Vend" means dispense, and doesn't necessarily need a money acceptor.

Would an ATM machine then fit this "definition.?" I will be running a new wire for an indoor ATM. Would you put a GFCI on that?

Yes we do- get out your 2008 book, where we added the section I quoted. "For the purpose of this section, the term vending machine means..."

before 2008, you have to go to a dictionary for a definition.

Vending Machine: n. 1. a coin-operated machine for selling small articles, beverages, etc.

All I'm saying here is that either way, in the code and in the dictionary, a vending machine serves two purposes, acceptance of payment along with vending. If it doesn't do the former then it doesn't belong in the vending machine category.

Never saw one that wasn't 240, so that would exclude GFCI protection on the 210.8(B)(4) basis. It still might be required on a 422.51 basis, BUT.. IF it is required and IF this ATM was made after Jan 1,2005 it will have factory GFCI protection. Very interesting puzzle.

Looks like th 2008 definition excludes your vending machine. I'd have almost liked to have seen you GFCI protect it just to hear the bank IT guys cry and moan.

No, it probably doesn't accept payment. (I know some do, but those are getting harder and harder to find!) Anyhow, it has to "dispense products or merchandise." Currency isn't really a product or merchandise. (Do I need to define those terms too?) :)

It accepts payment when it charges me $3.00 to get my $80.00. But I do agree that it's not necessary, especially in light of what Marc said about them being 240 and having integral GFCI protection. I didn't know they were 240. Of course I would have realized as I took out the old rec. and wire. I am just venturing into the commericial world baby steps at a time, so thanks for the help.

Thanks Marc. How about the switching? Is it required or can I use photo eyes to control them? Also switching for the inside lights can it be in any location that the installer chooses? Thanks

What state are you located in?
