I went to a State sponsored "Top 2008 NEC Changes" class last Wednesday. The motel inner courtyard offered these "light in tree" installations.

Please feel free to analyze these images for NEC defects.

No cable clamps were harmed (or used) in this installation.

What the... is all I can come up with.

The explanation is easy, Hotel 'Maintenance Man' doing electrical work.

Any of the hotels we deal with expect that the maintenance crew can do any trade at any time.

I once fixed the contactors to the outdoor lighting, the maintenance guys added a bunch of PAR38 floods to the 20 amp out door lighting circuits, that tripped the breaker so in went a 40 amp breaker, of course that was rough on the 20 amp contactors and the 12/2 NM.

ok I stand corrected . I only sugested that because last month I went on a service call and ho had installed a flood lite on a tree and it was done with emt and when I arrived the problem was that the emt had come apart I did not know how but that was the problem also I might add that HO had installed nm cable in the emt I did not realize that trees only grow form the top.

Don't believe it.

I'm working on a job right now and the new house is being built on a old home place that must be about 150 years old.

There used to be a fence along one side of the house.
I know because I can see the rings around the trees where the wire was fastened to the trees as it passed by.

On three trees in a row the rings are at the same height and about 15 feet up from the ground.

Either the trees have grown uniformly along their length, or else the fence was for some really big livestock:) .

I'll try to get some pictures and post them.

How do you explain the bicycle in the tree being that far above the ground?

just a opinion

Someone placed that high a long time ago?

In humans and other animals growth can occur in most parts of the body. As we mature, our bones, skin and muscle all increase in size. Trees do not grow like this. Trees grow by producing new cells in a very limited number of places. These places of cell division are called meristems. Meristems are zones of intense activity. They are where all new cells are formed and where they expand.
Trees grow in height as a result of meristems that are located at their branch tips. These meristems are called apical meristems. Roots also expand through the soil by growing at their tips as a result of apical meristems. All buds that you see on a tree contain apical meristems. Trunk diameter growth occurs as a result of another meristem already mentioned called the vascular cambium. The vascular cambium produces new xylem and phloem each year and as a result the trunk, branches and roots continue to increase in diameter. Have you ever seen a fence wire or board grown into a tree?

That is the result of the vascular cambium. The fence wire or board doesn't rise into the air because height growth doesn't occur out of the ground, it only occurs from the branch tips.

Temporary vs. permanent

Temporary vs. permanent

I have an Uncle who wanted to try these "buzz" bulbs in trees way out in his backyard to deter deer from eating his gardening. He already had power run to his fish pond, which is in the very near area. This was something that was done in a temporary fashion, just to try, and maybe keep for when he was gone for a day or two. I ran the trial is SOW, why dig if it may not work, and it was for use only on occasion?

Anyone heard of these "buzz bulbs?" Think they worked? Did I violate anything with this being "on trial" ?

If no one has heard of them, I will post a link tomorrow. They are not a light bulb, just a super high frequency ring producer.
