Re: limit for using romex on apt building

Personally I've got nothing against NM, they just don't use it here. Someday that may change.

This whole argument reminds me of the best word processor software. It is the one you learned, of course. :D

Re: limit for using romex on apt building

I use both methods in a custom home. EMT/thhn homeruns in the basement/crawl/attic to pull boxes. NM branch circuits to the pull boxes. Extra pipes to pull boxes for future circuits. NM is installed where it's mostly covered by rock. Areas exposed to view are mostly in pipe. No NM rat's nest going to the loadcenter.

Sounds like a nice way to do it.

Of course NM does not have to look like a rats nest at the panel.

Re: limit for using romex on apt building

I like to keep it neat at the panel too, everywhere actually. EC's sometimes don't like it much though. Too much labor. It's a shame that often an EC will be unhappy with nice looking work. I've heard things like "we don't bother doing that" from both people I've worked for and spectators.

Re: limit for using romex on apt building

About 5 or 6 years ago a study was done in one of the Chicago suburbs about the cost difference for EMT vs NM in the same basic house design. The use of EMT added 9% to 12% to the cost of the electrical installation. I would expect that it would be more now that steel has had a huge increase in cost. The suburb that did the study adopted a "pipe code" as they felt the cost was not significant in comparsion to the total cost of the house.

It's interesting that the decision was based on what they thought should be an acceptable cost hike instead of the merits of the wiring meathods.

Don would you say the people performing the study where pro or con pipe?

I just do not see how the difference would be that little. I will start asking questions of the PMs I work with.

I do agree with Charlie, the method we are used to is always 'the best' :p

Re: limit for using romex on apt building

I couldn't do it at 12% more if the pipe were free! But then I don't like MS Word as much as some people might either. :)

Bob,
Don would you say the people performing the study where pro or con pipe?
Neither, they just looked at the costs for the electrical work. In both cases experienced electricians did the installation.

Sam,
They felt that the additional safety gained by using EMT justified the small cost increment.
