was he the actual employee workin in the electrical dept?? I thought that they requir. the employee to have a electrical license to consider employment for that dept..........

The only requirements they have are the same as just about any other job. Legal age, pass a drug test, maybe do a criminal background, and that you have a pulse.

Been told big orange treats them good, but other than a retired electrician you wont get much help at that place. They simply will not pay enough to attract a real electrician.

I was at a big box today, one of the sales persons had a badge that said "electrical expert". I was going to ask them what the ampacity of 12 THHW is, but then I said to myself, don't go there.

But I have to give Home Depot credit for the nice kids day project they have on the first Saturday of the month. I take my grandaughter, today she made a picnic tote. Grandpa still helps a bit with the nailing.

You'd have been suprised if he asked "Table 310.16 rated ampacity or Art. 240.4(D) limit?"

I have worked with some licenses guys that 'side jobbed' at HD nights, I can not remember the actual pay but I do remember it was pretty good to stay warm or cool and dry.

We have a guy at the Orange Box here that is an electrician. He was unfortunately paralyzed in a motorcycle wreck. The one thing I will say is I have heard him tell customers more than once that they should leave their project up to someone qualified.

Willing to bet his boss never heard him say that. Can't sell anything that way.

I have overheard too much scary advice over the years while at the big orange or the big blue.

Perhaps a new slogan is in order...

"You can burn your house down. We can help!"

You can probably get him to cut you a 1 foot section of grounding rod too. Just tell him you want the end with the embossed lettering.

That's classic Celtic, I can't wait to show my co-worker's :) Since I am an electrical specialist at a HD I've told a number of people when they need to seek out a professional. Last week a bizarre man already had a 125a Homeline in his cart when I came upon him. He began asking questions that proved to me he didn't know his ass from his elbow.

Customer: Hi, umm I need breakers for this panel.
Me: What sizes do you need?
Customer: I don't know

He asks some more questions.

Me: You're in over his head.
Customer: "Hey I need help, that's why I'm here". He said this twice.

After another few minutes of questions he finally tells me that he does have an electrician doing the work.

Me: Okay, so what did he tell you to pick up?" "Did he just say hey get me a panel and some breakers?", "What size panel, what brand, what size breakers dude?"

He then noticed a panel up on display and inquired about it.

Me: That's a 200 amp Square D QO panel.
Customer: Oh yeah that's what I want. Which breakers do I need for it?
Me: Well wait a second, what size panel are you replacing?
Customer: My panel look just like that one.
Me: Yeah, you're replacing a 200amp panel with another? Are you upgrading? What size service do you have?
Customer: Well....those size wires look like the ones I have (Pointing at the SE coming out of the display panel) is that what I have in my house?
Me: Sir, how would I know what size cable you have at your house, you're in over your head man.
Customer: Blah

And he walks away.

There are no laws that govern the sale of electrical materials so the big box stores do just what they need to do to stay legal. They advertise expert electrical ( ambiguous ) help and not licensed electrical help from their sales people.

There are laws that govern the installation of electrical systems and this is where the homeowner takes full responsibility. Most of the week-end jobs would actually require a permit and an inspections so it's the homeowner that chooses to use the materials in an incorrect manner.

Think of it, you can buy yourself an assault rifle without one minute of training and what you do with such a weapon is up to you ( all you need is to meet legal requirements, normally breathing)

When a person buys electrical materials they have made the decision that they will be responsible for the use of said materials just the same as if the were buying a weapon.
