I believe that if solder connections were superior we would use them today. Sure crimps are easier but they are also a better way to make connections.

Define 'Better'.... We now use non-solder methods because they may well be:

  • faster
  • easier
  • require less training
  • RoHS/lead fumes issues
  • show failures more transparently.
  • are in general"good enough"
  • cheaper
But I can tell you that in spacecraft, with its rigorous QC, soldering is still in daily use.
A well-made solder joint takes a licking and keeps on conducting. Ask Voyager.

And the people (and machines) doing the soldering work to very very tight specifications, with inspections.
Rigorous QC makes a big difference from typical field conditions or even in shop work.
