can you use metal madison hangers on a plastic box?????

Trechnically no since you have exposed metal however you can slip in the add a depth ring and that would cover the metal madison clips.

Um, they kinda keep the box from falling back into the wall.

Yes thta's why I said they wouldn't work but I was thinking the op was asking because the metal clips would not be grounded and could get energize since a plastic box is not grounded.

I assumed the box had ears.

Wouldn't it be easier to just use the proper box?

Are madisons listed for use w/plastic boxes?

I have occasionally used one Madison strap on a plastic nail-on wall box when the stud either twisted badly or was bumped out of position between the rough wire and the finish. This condition can sometimes cause the off side of the box to protrude beyond the drywall. I can normally slip a Madison strap in along that side to hold the box back flush.

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one to have ever done that.

Never thought to do that. I usually just shave down the plastic. Oh no. Did I just violate the listing of the box?

We always called them madison straps. I say no unless they are bonded to the egc, just as a metal finish plate must be

Why not toe screw the box into the joist? It will hold the box from moving

You may not believe this but we get turned down for the screw being exposed in the box. I have seen boxes designed for that purpose but the screw recesses in a well when tightened.

Did you ever notice the recess for the screw on the plastic fan boxes that stradle a joist. Apparently it has to be.

What I don't understand is why the metal screws and clamp for a round box is allowed. The bakelite brown ones have such clamps. We use to use those but not anymore.

When you use madison straps with a metal box, do you bond yours to the egc, or to the box, or do you accept them simply touching the box as being effectivly grounded?

Touching... interested to hear if others bond.
