My house was built in 1957 and the best that I can see is that the service and panel was upgraded in 1997. I purchased the house in 1998 and ran in a few more electrical circuits. What I noticed back then was that the main breaker assembly was twisted a little, which seems to be caused by the way the main service cables were connected to the mains.
Last year I added current current sensors to the house circuits (none affecting the the service cables) and when I went to put the panel cover back on the mains did not line up with the opening in the panel cover. The the panel was a little more difficult to pull forward because the mains were wedged against the side of the opening. I figured that I would contact an electrician and have them take a look at it and see what they had to say. Well, my neighbor was having electrical work done and I asked the electrician if he would take a look at it and give me a price to fix it. He looked at it and pushed on the main service cables and said that it was not a big thing that the mains did not line up with the opening. Just close it up and do not worry about it.
Not happy with that answer I called 2 more electricians and neither one would even come out to look at it. I have the feeling that had I worded my question differently such as "Would you replace the service panel?", they would have jumped at coming out. Looking at the cables, I believe that they just need to be twisted to relieve the pressure pushing the mains off center. I am afraid that they may eventually snap the mains mounting bracket and that could really cause a nasty situation.
Your thoughts,
Don
