Most ECs will tell you it is never a good time to go into buisness as they are running down the road with loafs of bread under each arm.

The larger percent of EC's fight to just make a living, and usually not a great one, only a very small number, are making big money, don't think just because they have new trucks with great art work, and they are driving an expensive car, they are making it in the electrical contracting business, some of these guys are in debt way over all sane limits, or they have a wife or family with money, or just a wife with a high six figure income. What is really finny, is the ones with the least, try to but on a good show.

Peter I really think that your decision should really come from your heart. Don't take this the wrong way and i dont really know you that well but you almost come off as "ho hum" about your quandary. You said it yourself no kids, wife etc so to me "What is the Problem"? Its almost like your setting yourself up for defeat before you even started. and I only say that because of your comment "well at least I gave it a shot". I think a lot of people dont make it as entrepreneurs because they dont really want it. Ive seen plenty of people go belly up in the restaurant buissnes because they go into it with your attitude. for me its almost an obsession

It's very simple. 3-4 years ago we wouldn't even be having this discussion. It would be a no-brainer. I'm young enough where I've never had to weather a serious economic downturn before. The government just added $8 trillion to the money supply virtually overnight. There will be a day of reckoning for that.

Do I want to do this? Very much so. But I think it's a bit sensible to ask some people with way more life experience than I have for advice, don't you think? :)

Im curious as to what is your main reason for wanting to go into buisness for yourself.

Probably for the very same reasons anyone else would want to be self employed.

Peter, Nothing ventured nothing gained. Just the fact that you are thinking of going out on your own is reason enough to do it IMO. What is the worst thing that can happen. you fail and go get a job again till the next time you try again. If it isin't below you to have a part time job while you venture out on your own that is a way to help make ends meet. Maybe you learn that you are not cut out to be self employed, maybe you end up hiring 10 guys, the only way to find out is to try. Or you can make excuses like the economy is bad now. While many EC's have folded here I have had a growth of better than 30% this year. I always think doing what you want is better than worriing about the outcome.
