You do not need anything other than the center point of each hole, but the squares make it easier to visualize.

Yes i understand that i only need the center point but like you said the squares make in better to visualize so lets say i have 5 1" pipes with 1" space how big would i make the squares and the spacing between them and of course i would use the center point of the squares ?

I never used that method, but expect the squares would be half the diameter of the hole plus 1"
