Any problems with using mc cable in a plenum rated ceiling? As far as I know its ok.
I do agree. 300.22(C)(1) allows the use of it. I questioned it for a second because a co-worker said it had to a special MC with a coating or something. I was just double checking myself.joebell said:I do not see any reason why you would not be able to use MC cable in a plenum ceiling. I think your OK

Is mc rated for it already?resistance said:You cannot use standard MC in a plenum. You would have to buy MC that is rated for said use.
resistance said:You cannot use standard MC in a plenum. You would have to buy MC that is rated for said use--it has interlocking tape
I disagree.joebell said:Resistance
There is no restriction of the installation of MC cable in a plenum ceiling in the listing of the MC cable or in Article 330
The only mention of the interlocking tape is for grounding purposes

My question: is it true that they manufacture more than one type of MC cable?

They don't want you to use the MC with a PVC coating.
Good question, and something I asked in my earlier post. The question still remains. Is it plenum ceiling or an air handling space? Big difference.
Most of the time its an air handling space. I pointed this out at work the other day and they said "same thing", but its not.
Yes, they manufacture many types of MC, some with an overall nonmetallic covering. This type of MC cable would not be permitted in a suspended ceiling used as a plenum.
But standard MC cable without an overall nonmetallic covering can be used in a suspended ceiling used for enviromental air-handling purposes. Take a look at 300.22(C)(1).

resistance said:At least we agree on the fact that they manufact more than one type of MC cable. Seeing that MC cable comes in many types, then would you agree that Plenum rated MC cable is manufactured (NEC 110.3) for a purpose of installing in plenums, and that not all MC cable is allowed in plenums?
QUOTE]
In the OP it was asked can MC cable be installed in a plenum ceiling ,I took this to mean regular metal jacketed MC cable there was no mention of PVC coated or any other type of MC cable.
So as for regular metal jacketed MC yes it can be installed in the ceiling as set forth in 300.22(A) & (B), as well as 330.10 and in the UL white book under Metal-Clad Cable (PJAZ).
