Hello please help I need clarification.
We have a Inspector here in Texarkana Texas that now says we cant run from the outside meter gang center that has a main by each meter thru the building to the spaces. That they have to be on the outside of building or come up under the concrete. we work all over and service are ran this way in strip centers and outlet malls from little rock to dallas. They are protected outside by a main so what is the difference in them and a house lighting circuit running space to space to feed wall packs ect.
Also we have always if there was a client who wanted to take like 2 spaces and the center was setup for only 200 amps per space that we could install 2 metters for that one business as long as it was labeled that the is space was serviced by two meters.
so my question is can a business take up 3 spaces that are connected and setup up for 3 200 amp panels in each space have three meters in the meter gang center and be labeled that this space is served by 3 meters.

From what I read and my understanding from the Utility companys transformer to the main on the meter gang center is consider the Service so that is what 230.2 covers Number of Services which there is only 1
Now from the load side of that main to the metergang packs and the 200 Amp breakers they are considered Feeders under 215

Isnt this Correct?
So if someone wanted to have 10 meters serving a space they can and it would be consider still one service

Did the inspector provide a code section?

Chris

Tell him you will need citing of code sections that are in violation, by AHJ' own rules he likely is supposed to give you that anyway.

How are you supposed to get it right if you don't know what you are supposed to comply with, is the next thing to tell him when he balks at that.

If he can't find it just may not be anywhere in there.

Mentioning his supervisor is next.

he says it is because of 230.2 about there not being more then 1 meter per business because he is calling each meter a service when it is not by NEC definition. The service is from utility Transformer to first Disconnect which is Main 1000 Amp on meter gang center, after that the meters and 200 amp breakers are feeders plus the services running thru space to space by the NEC definition.
Is this the correct Answer?

I didn't look but pretty sure the word meter doesn't appear in 230.2.

Service disconnecting means is what matters not meters. If you have a 1000 amp main ahead of those meters - that is the service disconnecting means. All the runs to the occupant spaces are feeders - and nothing in 230 applies to any of them. 215 covers feeders.
