does anybody know why meter sockets are only rated for 10k of short circuit current?

Cheaper? Actually, I understand APS requires all of theirs to be rated 22 kA. This is from memory and is not to be trusted.

under meter sockets in the UL white book, says for short circuit current ratings exceeding 10k the marking includes the type and rating of overcurrent protection to be used with the meter socket, has anybody ever dealt with this?

mdp,

I've never dealt with it, but, it seemes like current limiting OCPD would be required.

We furnish the meter fittings up to 1200 amperes and they are normally hot sequence. Therefore, you don't get to put overcurrent protection in front of our cash register. :)

Here it is quite common in large commercial installatons to have a Main Disconnect with a trough fro installation of a disconnect (with OCP) then a meter socket or CT can and meter.

MDP,

How about this line of thinking, as long as the Electrical system is installed correctly, the

fault should be opened before the meter socket receives extensive damage. 110.10?

I see that, but the last sentence of that section also says listed products applied in accordance with their listing shall be considered to meet the requirements of this section

All I'm saying is if the short (fault) hasn't opened by the time it gets to the meter socket

it's not going to matter what the sccr of the meter socket is. There is no OCPD up-stream

of the meter socket. Also, is the meter socket even covered by the NEC ? 90.2(B)(5)(A).
