What about the duplex garvin being cut at the top in order to make it fit?

Huh?

There is no such thing as a 'dryer' recep. There is something called a NEMA 10-30 recep. Standard for older dryers, but this just shows what happens when the vernacular terms get used ('dryer' recep, 'range' recep, etc).

Yeah, I fell into it and got back into that habit of name calling the recep.
I call it a 30 amp 3 wire recep when ordering material. Funny thing is, I never knew the right term for the plate, So I still order a single or 2 gang dryer recep plate :D

It looks like that is a 'convertible' range/dryer (sue me, 480! :D) receptacle with the interchangeable inset plate missing.

yes that's correct but you misread or misunderstand the statement by aftershock which is what you replied to. It is correct that there should be a strap connecting the frame to the (bare) EGC.

The EGC was not bare.. there was not one there at all. The dryers were wired with 10/3 plain, no ground. The inspector would fail the job if you ran 10/2 with bare ground. That is how it was done around here till the 4/wire system was code

Unless there was a j-box somewhere, it wouldn't make any difference if it was bare or

insulated when 3 wire dryers were code. At one end you take the neutral to the metal of

the dryer, on the panel end ( main panel only ) the neutral and EG bus are jumpered.

That exception did say main panel only.

around here it used to be 10-2 copper or 8-2 SE-U.

2 insulated hots and a bare conductor which would technically serve as the neutral and ground.

For the love of GOD spill the beans!! I know I'm going to feel like an idiot.
I don't even care ,I just have to know what you are seeing. I know it's
going to be obvious, but, it is just killing me ! :D

ok. i will take a shot at it. besides all that was said and the phone cord choke hazzard..:D it looks like the terminal with the red wire on it also has a black wire too. but it looks to be aluminum.. i'm also thinking that duplex receptacle should be gfci...

Good call I didn't even notice that until you brought it up.
