That's nonsense. Unless the junction box manufacturer says you are required to use that mounting method it's not a violation of the manufacturers instructions.110.3(B)
Must be used and installed in the manner in which it was listed (paraphrased). If the j-box mfr provides mounting ears and you are not using them, choosing instead to drill through the back, then you are violating this article.
If you look in manufacturers instructions for such boxes you often see pictures of the mounting years screwed to walls. Does that mean you can't screw it to a piece of strut.
