did a bathroom remodel the other day that consisted of moving the gfic from a wall that was removed to a new wall that was three feet over. It was on a 15 amp cir and it fed on to something else that i could not find.pulled wire and reworked it to the new location in the new wall. Inspector shows up for inspection and fails this says it needs to be on a 20 amp cir. only way this can happen is to go through 20 ft of finished ceiling!what do you think? did not give a code number on the failure either.

IMHO, because this is a new wall in a new location the receptacle must meet all the requirements for a new receptacle, including being on a 20 amp circuit.

Chris

This is one of those area that the NEC will not help with. My opinion is not the same as Chris' but the AHJ makes the call.

I agree, new 20 amp circuit required. Except if you're here in NJ. Then you could just install a GFCI receptacle on the old circuit.

It's hard to make a call in the field when you can't read the inspectors mind. This call could go either way.

THANKS FOR THE POSTS WILL BREAK THE BAD NEWS TO THE GENERAL GUESS I WILL HAVE TO RIP A SLOT 20 FEET THROUGH THE FAMILY ROOM CEILING TO THE PANEL.ALL TO MOVE A GFIC AND SINK THREE FEET JUST TURNED A TWO HOUR JOB INTO A GOOD DAYS WORK.THIS HOUSE IS 8 YEARS OLD AND A WIRING NITEMARE ANYWAY. It is inspectors call. I would think he could bend a little on this being it was legal when house was new. It's because of things like this that many do not pull permits.

What year code was adopted in your area 8 years ago? The 1996 NEC first required the bathroom receptacles to be on a 20 amp circuit.

Chris

If the house is only 8 years old, then how could the install be legal when the house was new?

-Jon

Many homes are built to previous editions. Not every AHJ adopted the '08 on Jan. 1 '08. Most are still on the '05, some on the '02 and '99, some are even still on the '96. This is assuming the AHJ even adopts the NEC. There's no legal requirement to do so. They can write their own rules if they so choose.

I don't think this is all that grey ,.. the outlet was removed , the new outlet needs to meet the requirement of today.

Has the use of bathroom changed any ? Your forcing a huge cost to bring the house up to code in one very small area. Like i said this is why some do not pull permits. Bypass permit and save hundreds. In my own house i do bring up what i can within reason. Built in 74 so only so much i can do.
