I need to find and buy a set of books from that era. Because I do so much work on those government houses. And get told by inspectors I can’t reconnect a lot of the older stuff when I change out a panel or do a remodel. But if I can show that it was indeed at the time code compliant then they will let me keep the old stuff.

Showing the NEC of that time won't mean much. 1. It may not be the issue that was adopted at the time the building was complete (ie, a house built in '27 may not have been wired to the '26, or the '25, or even the '23.). 2. It may not have had any code cycle in effect at the time. 3. It may have been a local code that was in force at the time.

Tracking those issues down won't be fun.
