Re: Need for inspectors?

Hello all
I just wanted to say around here (in East Tn)I have been in the electrical business for myself for around 10 years,I have worked with some good inspectors that wanted to do a good job and some that liked to make the money!
we have 3 or 4 that inspects in my area and I have to say Thanks to them because they do want the work done right but they will help if you have a problem,I have never been Red Taged and not because of the inspector not doing his job but because before i start a new job i always check the Code Book if it is a new type of installation that i have not done in awhile.
I have one new inspector i guess is the best i have had (Sam)He is very through and if he finds anything i may have missed he will point it out and reference it to the code and i make sure it is corrected.BTW I'am always present for my inspections.
Not all Inspectors are bad!!

Thanks Joel Hall

Re: Need for inspectors?

many states have token inspectors. this is not to say they are unqualified....they are....

it's just the workload they are required to complete is absolutely unreasonable, so they spend maybe 15 minutes on a job that could easily take hours

as such, i understand the frustration

a better Q might be, what's the IAEI doing to introduce a practical inspector/trade work ratio?

how much do they spend legislating?

an IAEI petition just went around in my state (state chapter) to require licensing in single family homes...

the inspectors know they will be completely inundated, yet have stood thier ground, and will move to increase thier flock as they gain backing from the trade

why? because we're tired of competing with sorts that don't know an outlet from an omlet, that's why....

so what's your chapter doing boptrop ??

SO are you saying hire more inspectors? Inspectors are paid by
1. Taxes
2. Permit fees

Either way nobody wants to pay more...even to be absolutely safe.

Don't you think the most unsafe installation is done by HO and not by a contractor?

I think contractors make tiny mistakes...oops, need qanother staple to hold the romex, whereas the HO makes the biggies; #14 on a 20Amp kitchen circuit. Cutting off the grounds in romex.

Bottom line is it costs money to have more inspectors (qualified or not).

Do you want to pay?

Re: Need for inspectors?

I know for fact that there are some inspectors that don?t check work at all. I see this mostly when an inspector has been inspecting contractor?s jobs over time and they grow a relationship. And in a couple of cases the ec does good work in the beginning but once they know the inspector will literally mail them their sticker they do shoddy work. I feel the number of good inspectors out weighs the bad ones. But in the end the same goes for electricians.

If you do good work and your inspector knows it then doesn?t worry about it. If you know of a person that does crappy work and gets passed then do something about it. Contact the local buildings department.
