nm cable in pvc

Nm cable can only have the sheath removed in the J box. With out the sheath it would not have any markings, therefore a code violation. The conduit is acutely EMT installed on the side of the house in Wrightwood. Snow area

Depending on what part of the cable your looking at, your not going to get a lot of information off of it anyway.

So if I install a short piece of NM that doesn't have the markings on it between 2 boxes, is that a violation?

NOT.

The 1/4" of sheath serves no purpose for identification.
That's right for the typical case.

I was referring to a common objection to using unsheathed NM conductors in a raceway after a proper transition from open NM cable, namely that the individual conductors in the NM cable are not labeled. Not sure if that is really a code violation, but if it is I believe using some of the sheath to identify the conductors would fix that problem.

How would a small piece of sheath ever identify the conductors?
As far as I know, the sheath on NM whether it be, orange, yellow or white is mostly all the same stuff.

If I happened to use a piece of orange sheathing laying around to satisfy the rule of having to have a 1/4" of sheathing inside of the enclosure, and the stripped cable in the conduit happened to be #12 or 14 instead of #10, would my problem still be fixed?

No.

That may be true. In the case I an referring to is about 8 ft long. Now in your case the sheath must be on the cable no matter what the length is, if it is exiting a junction box and not in a chase.

It wouldn't. You could use a long enough section of sheath to include the identifying information printed the sheath.

BTW, as far as I can tell, the requirement for 1/4" of NM cable sheath to extend into a box applies only to non-metallic boxes and conduit bodies (314.17(C)) and a few other specific allowances.

Though I am on the side that says the sheath must be on the cable within the pipe, I think by using a piece of NM sheath he is trying to identify which conductors are part of same cable as well as indicate they are NM cable.

Outside of strict application of the code I otherwise don't really care if someone wants to do it that way.

I was over ridden the other day on a call, need to know if I missed anything. (17) 12-2 nm cables in a 6ft long 2in PVC conduit, the cables sheath was removed prior to installation. 2 of the circuits serve kitchen small appliances.
my call wire ampacity based on 310.15 (B)(16) 30 amps. Wire ampacity to be reduced 50% 310.15 (B)(3)(A) 15 amps. Small appliance min amperage is 20 amps 210.52(B)(1). marking on wire required 310.120(B)(1).

To get back to your original post, yes you would have an ampacity issue. In addition this would have to comply with 312.5(C) Exception which would require the cable sheath to be continuous through the raceway and extend a 1/4" into the box.
