Is NM listed "for use to tie down a ladder on top of a truck" or do I need to use UF since it is a wet location?!?!

It's all good, no inspector ever catches me. :D
I'll be forwarding this to the secret email address that blankets all inspectors. Created just for people who think they can get away with this kind of stuff :D

Oh and btw, it's "code" to use #6 solid hardrawn for ladder tie down. For conduit you're allowed to use #8 solid any type

Re: NM or UF ?

I think it's evolved into actual industry related discussion.

Re: NM or UF ?

If your attaching aluminum conductors to your iron ladder rack, your going to need some Ox-gard for this application. Otherwise, your going to have some big time oxidation. You don't want your ladders all over the highway.

Re: NM or UF ?

Alright, since this isn't going away I feel it's my responsibility to try to make it educational in some way! sooo...
I used to use just NM to hold down my ladders until I saw a coworker get into an accident right in front of me. The van stopped, the ladders didn't. NM snapped like thread. I never forgot that, and when I started my own business I bought "Bike Lock" type cables. They serve 2 purposes, one is anti-theft and the other is safety. I still use NM but the locks are there just in case.

Bless your little hearts; work must be good for all of you. I can?t afford ladders so I just throw a couple of saw bucks and a rotten board in the back and away I go

Re: NM or UF ?

Actually the 2005 NEC has added an Article for just this type of installation.
Article 1000.
Extra Uses of Electrical Equipment Not Covered in Chapters 1 - 4.
Part I General.
The use of electrical equipment is not permitted unless acceptable as per the requirements of Article 1000.
Part II
The Use of Cables and Conductors for other than Electrical.
1000.10
(A). The use of electrical cables and conductors for other than electrical is permitted under the following circumstances.
(1).The weather is right.
(2).The weather is not a factor as long as the temperature is 10 degrees above the norm for the location of the installation.

Part II.
The use of electrical equipment for other than electrical.
(A) Electrical equipment is permitted for other than electrical installations as permitted per the respective article that is responsible for the type of equipment to be installed.
Exception: The use of electrical cable, conductors and equipment can be used for whatever purpose, as long as it conforms to local law.
