NM or UF ?

Re: NM or UF ?

Since I have no luggage rack on my car I have to use a blanket underneath the ladder. I then use nylon or polypropylene rope to tie down.

Bonding does not matter because if lightning hits the car the lightning will still incinerate the tires!

Re: NM or UF ?

Mc, better start using a cable to hold down those ladders or people will think you are a painter. The blanket could be used for a drop cloth, see what I mean?

Re: NM or UF ?

painters have at least three ladders on their cars. They use tarps , if anything.

i also read the exception that single conductors, # 10 and larger were acceptable for ladders up to 20', and that 2 #10's were okay for a 24" ladder.

Re: NM or UF ?

any color code ?
The Local AHJ here makes me match the wire tie down color to the color of the "largest" ladder on the roof. My Extension Ladder is yellow so I get away with 12/2 NM. If I heard right it's going to change in 2008.

Re: NM or UF ?

I use #12 Solid THHN/THWN wire to hold them down. Although #10 or larger is needed to hold the triple nickel in place in my cube van, as #12 seems to snap with an, ever so slight, application of the brakes.

Re: NM or UF ?

I think a Code proposal is in order:

6-8 foot ladders: 14/2
10-12 foot ladders: 12/2
14 feet and up step ladders and all extension ladders: 10/2

Exception: No less than 3 pieces of at least #12 THHN shall be permitted for tie downs on each ladder rack.

Re: NM or UF ?

So what do i use on a green 6 foot.Been using 14-2 but see now that i am in violation.Would green thhn be allowed ? could i possibly use bare #12 since it is = to green ? Also is there any monthly tests required ?

Re: NM or UF ?

Come on Jim you know you have to color code that 6 ft green ladder and being that it is green there must be a static strap jumper that goes to the bumper and drags across the highway,Sheech one would think you would know that after all it is the ladder is green :D Oh my what if the ladder is orange ,would you need a pair of hot gloves to unload it :p

Re: NM or UF ?

Actually Allen you are off the mark a little. Since the truck is a separate structure (that which is built), it will require 2 driven groundrods, with a grounding electrode conductor installed from the ground rods to the green ladder tie down. I do believe that the minimum size is 6AWG, but for larger trucks, up to 3/0 is required.
You find this info in the notes to Table 250.66, there is an exception for breakaway ladder supports for any trucks driven by other than Qualified Persons :D :D
