I have an Inspection coming up on a large residential Basement remodel. The Electrical contractor called about using "Carlon" round cut in boxes to support Pendant fixtures. They weigh 6 lbs. each. I did check Carlons site Note: Not for fixture support? Well My research is simply this site and with this Group. Thanks

I guess if they are not listed for fixture support you cant use them for fixture support. What a screwy scenario, they must be for round receptacles. There are round plastic cut in boxes that are listed for fixture support.

Not sure about the Carlons but I use the black ones with the U shaped bracket in the back. Those ones have how many pounds they support stamped in the back of the box along with the cu. in. I am not sure what brand the ones I use are T&B maybe.

They are only listed for making splices and for smoke detectors.
Now, we all know that everyone uses them for hanging fixtures, myself included.

I really like the way NEC words luminaire (Fixture) Def. article 100 "Luminaire" Where is Fixture? I hate to put the "burden" on ya'll but this Forum is the best for advice, education and what the he-- to do. Also, I have used them before on light weight "fixtures" in the past. Hope I did not "screw up"

Allied fiberglass 3/0 cutins are good for fixture support up to 15 lbs. It seems as though the carlons should be good for more than that, with their larger surface contact.

Carlon's site specifically mentions that the round cutin box uses are for junction boxes and smoke detectors. It even says that they are not for support of fixtures. That is as straight forward as it gets.
I never understood why people would use cutin boxes for support of fixtures in ceilings.
The fixture can be secured to the box, and than supported by framing in the ceiling.

If you look at the installation instructions, you will see that they recommend that you install these in "substrate" equal to the strength of 3/8 plywood, as they were tested that way by UL.

The installation instructions I mentioned are in the link that was provided. Open the link, then click on the instruction link. You will read what I read. It does not say not to install in Sheetrock ceilings, but they say to install in the same "substrate" that UL tested the boxes in - which was 3/8 plywood.
