I agree Marc. I think that's a very accurate description of the state of our industry right now.

its not just electricians though. its the difference in mind-set of
a) those people who want to leave things a little bit better than when they arrived (or a lot better as the case may be) and
b) those people who just don't really care (for whatever "reason" (or excuse))

(and when I say for whatever reason, that includes those individuals running businesses who decide at some point that the amount of profit left on the job isn't enough for them to take any pride in their work (I am sure we have all been in this position, and if you are running on a shoestring budget it can be an issue, but every job isn't going to be a gravy job, and you have to take the good with the bad, because at the end of it all the only thing you take with you is your reputation. oh, and by the way, your reputation goes a long way towards getting you more work (especially the gravy kind)

Hey brian john, I tried to do my best in that post to not seem like I was making a blanket statement about the quality of electricians. I was only refering to the scores on a test. And those scores do not necessarily coincide with the quality or ability of the electrician. I even saluted those who have had little formal training yet have risen to the top.

Well, I have had some formal training and some OJT, and still haven't risen to the top. I don't know if we have anyone on this forum who has, but I do know there are an awful lot of them here who have all of the qualificatios to be at the top.

One of the things I have learned is that it is a lot easier to ask questions when there is some doubt about anything.

This is as fine a place to get questions answered as anyplace I have seen. (electrical questions that is) The medical advice here isn't the greatest.

When I was a helper (I was never in a formal apprenticeship) a mechanic I worked with use to say "Who is the best electrician in Washington DC?" ...LONG PAUSE... Then he would say "And why am I" Always got a laugh from someone even though it was not true.

Naah, balderdash.

Ask me all about lobotomy, I'll tell you all I remember.

See, I stand corrected, but I am still trying to learn. Now, what was that statement again. I forgot again.

No wonder this learning thing is so hard. I keep forgetting.

Be careful choosing the doctor for those Lobotomies though. Those guys are just like electricians. Some are really good and some not so good.

At least that's what my Lobotomist told me.
