I am with marc on this but can not verify it as I dont have an IEEE green book (I am open to some sending me one though  ). I dont know about the six foot rule either so I am curious if someone does know..I have several scew together rods in the ground and even a system with with 2 eights and a screw together set..Just get out the big hammer and hammer away; kind of like the hit any key tool..

What are you guys using for hammer drills and bits?

Why you trying to derail a perfectly good thread?

(My every day hammer drill for this is the Milwaukee 5321-21 with a ground rod driver bit. Matter of fact, that's my every day hammer drill for most everything.)

If a Hilti TE905 won't do the job, I'll quit.

It also has the power to put this thread back on track......

It looked like a perfectly good sidetrack, just off topic for the thread it was posted in, so I moved the ground-rod driving posts to their own thread. Carry on. :)

Water will work

Water will work

One bottle of water, soft soil, rod goes in like a champ. no hammer's.

anyone tried that trick?

Yes, until the inspector caught me and told me to drive another one without water.....

so is it illegal to drive a rod in the rain?

It would take you so long to drive a rod the hole would fill up with water?

Or don't you have enough sense to come in out of the rain?

I'm young so I still drive my rods with a sledge... so I'm out there for awhile...;)

We use water and our hands. Takes about four or five good thrusts and then stand on it the last foot or so.

I have, long ago, used this method. But the soil 'round here isn't condusive to this method on occasion. $&*#!@ rocks and all.....
It can turn in to a rather extracted affair, resulting in the utilization of a bubble tub at the end of the day.

Yes, but I know a way to modify it that makes it supperior to driving with a rotor hammer. The idea comes from the oil patch. Use a slurry (mud) made from bentonite clay as the lube.
