I have a 7.5 MW load bank (used in testing generators) that was installed and the contractor used schedule 40 PVC to run the 4160 VAC, 500 KCMIL cable above ground on a cement pad. Can schedule 40 be used above ground like this?

Re: PVC Sch. 40 conduit

A lot has to do with the location it is in and what the pipe is identified for.

The code reference is 2002 NEC 352.10(F) & 12(C). Make note of what is written on the pipe in your installation.

Re: PVC Sch. 40 conduit

I'm not sure about your location but here in KY you have to use schedule 80 anytime you are above ground. The conduit which enters the ground must also be schedule 80. The first full piece of conduit in the ground can then be schedule 40. Regardless of the situation, I recommend using schedule 80. It is much more durable and is less likely to cause you problems in the future.

Re: PVC Sch. 40 conduit

I would think it depends on whether or not the conduit was subject to physical damage. I know that some areas define that as anything below 7'.
