If that EMT or RMC was being used for required physical protection of the installed conductors, then substituting sch 40 PVC would be "illegal" for that application. In the eyes of the code, sch 40 PVC and ordinary NM cable are pretty much the same with respect to their resistance to physical damage. Schedule 80 PVC is the only nonmetallic raceway rated for protection against physical damage. I don't know if this relates to your question or not, but here you have it anyhow.

The only thing i've ever seen break PVC is a car,
Jump in a ditch in the middle of winter that has some sch 40 PVC running on the bottom, and you can crush it like an egg. At least I can, and I'm not all that heavy. (come to think of it, I don't know if I've ever seen a fat electrician)

Bad example, your allowed to run SCH 40 in the ground... :D I worked with a heavy guy once, was not a pretty sight...

I just feel the fittings should be equal...

We have run lots of PVC 40 inside of houses. Like anything installed correctly it is no trouble. There are many installs that PVC is the better choice. With a PVC bender it can make the job alot nicer, less glue.

We run SCH.80 PVC in the ground and at the stub ups....just because of the added strengh even if it is required under 300.5...not because we have to in the ground itself. We also use PVC alot inside for going to ATS and between panels for (2) 200A ( ie: 400A ) service setups.

You should not have any problem in your application....view 352.10

EEC,

I guess the answer to your question depends on where you substitute pvc for another raceway type.

I would say that it would be illegal to install pvc in an attic due to the increased ambient tempurature, ( that would really depend on the climate you live in, and the AHJ's point of view) . I live in CA and attics could easily get as hot as 122*F in the summer , a clear violation of 352.12(D).

I would recommend reviewing 352 , 2005 NEC. Especially 352.12 , as long as you avoid the conditions listed I would say your ok.

hope this helped

Pool feeders all the time. I sometimes do Mcmansions that have levels that go down hills in steps. I run pvc underground from slabs at one level to the next for panel feeders and branch circuits. And lets not forget Island feeder and in floor (concrete slab) receptacle outlets. Just some of the ok uses for pvc inside.

Check your local building codes. I know that for several years, the city of Seattle did not allow PVC inside building lines. That was the only jurisdiction around here, that I know of, that had that rule.

Local rules can cause a major head ache if you don't check, we have an area where to jurisdictions inter twine and one side of the street is county and the other city. Two seperate AHJs. The county has much more restrictive rules then the city. Always good to know what the local rules are.
