What code article would I find the requirements for installing smoke alarms in a residential setting. Beginning of 760 says they are not subject to requirements of article 760.

The location and mounting is normally addressed by the applicable Building Code in your area.

The local building code will tell you what type of alarms are required, where they have to be located and whether they need to be interconnected.
NEC will tell you some additional information about acceptable wiring methods once you have the other information for your locale.

How big of an area does one smoke alarm cover?

I don't believe they are installed like that.

Typically the rules will require one smoke alarm at specific locations.

Like 'provide one smoke alarm at each bedroom door' or provide one smoke alarm at the foot of the basement stairs.

They are not installed for full coverage like smoke detectors are in non-dwelling units.
