I still don't understand why PVC isn't used. Rigid gives a parallel neutral so it would seem like it is better to have pvc. I guess there have never been bad effects from the rigid so they still require and , no doubt it is stronger
There are any number of parallel paths for the grounded conductor current on the line side of the service disconnect. I don't see the path created by the use of metallic service raceways as an issue. I have seen issues with the code required parallel path via the TV cable shield and via metal underground water piping systems.
In my opinion. PVC has two uses. Where there are very serve corrosive conditions or underground. I have never seen an exposed PVC installation that looked good after a year or two. Even with supports as required by the code, it sags.
In this area, the local codes only permit rigid for service conductors.
